Glow Winter Light Festival

An all-ages illumination celebration takes over the city centre with a free festival over the Family Day long weekend

Calgary’s downtown core will shine even brighter this family day weekend. Running February 14-18 from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., the second annual Glow festival celebrates light, music, and creativity through a stunning series of sparkling art installations. Downtown Calgary's free, family-friendly event promises to mesmerize with its interactive displays showcasing the evolving partnership between art and technology.

From larger-than-life projections and illuminated see-saws, to DJ hosted dance parties and live concerts, here's all you need to know about Calgary’s brightest winter festival.

Glow presents a new, exciting theme every night.

Check out the Family Day Skate Party at the Brightside Olympic Plaza Hub on February 18.

Five Nights, Five Unique Themes

Glow features a special theme for each night of the festival.

With its February 14 kick-off, hearts will be fluttering in downtown Calgary. Impress your special someone by designing a “Love Light” for the Brightside Olympic Plaza Hub’s (228 8 Ave SE) large-format Valentine’s Day installation.

MakeFashion, at Brookfield Paza (1st St and 7th Ave SW) on February 15, is sure to be an enlightening affair. Expect high-tech, cutting-edge couture on the catwalk at Glow’s only ticketed show. To secure your spot, purchase a seat in advance.

At Nightlight, on February 16, the Brighlight Olympic Plaza Hub will undergo a magical makeover, featuring headlining DJs, performance artists and creative technicians. The free all-ages sight and sound spectacle, curated by BassBus, promises to light up the night and get temperatures rising.

February 17 is all about local talent. Join your favourite Calgary musicians for a free upbeat outdoor concert at the Brightside Olympic Plaza Hub. Sunday’s Glow LIVE lineup includes Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, JJ Shiplett, The Static Shift and Brad Saunders.

Grab your skates and dance on ice at the Brightside Olympic Plaza Hub’s Family Skate Party on February 18. Music, games and giveaways are just a few of the exciting highlights awaiting you at Glow’s grand finale.

Glow is the perfect addition to a night out in the city.

Make a Night of It

Whether you’re indulging in a concert, comedy show or one of the city’s top restaurants, Glow is the perfect addition to a night out downtown. The event’s vibrant art installations are further enhanced with food, music, and a festival-style atmosphere. Along with a variety of food trucks, you’ll find most of the area’s restaurants, pubs,  and businesses open throughout festival.

Enhance your evening by creating a progressive dining trail along the route. Start by warming up with a hot chocolate from Starbucks in the Calgary Marriott, break for craft cocktails and share plates at Klein / Harris or The Guild, and then refuel on hearty street grub from one of the trucks.

Bringing the kids? No problem, there’s plenty of family-friendly options – like Earls Bankers Hall and Milestones on Stephen Ave.

15 mesmerizing art installations await your discovery.

Plan Your Route

Glow’s 15 light installations are located along Stephen Avenue and 7th Ave SW, between 5th St SW and Macleod Trail. Begin the self-guided 14-block loop at Harley Hotchkiss Gardens (661 4th St SW) and be sure to keep watch for the Beakerhead bunnies foraging for carrots and artichokes. From here, marvel at the over-the-top collection of radiant displays while meandering east towards the festivities at the Brightside Olympic Plaza Hub. En route, swing by Brookfield Plaza to snap a shot in the Glow photo booths.

Plan to play for at least an hour – or two – as every innovative art piece features cool interactive elements. Think: LED see-saws and real-time video mapped sculpture.
