Why Go
The Outdoor Centre at the University of Calgary is the largest centre of its kind in North America. Open to everyone, they offer outdoor skills programs, guided trips and over 10,000 rental items for a large variety of activities in all seasons. Programs and trips are created and lead by experienced coordinators that have a variety of high-level certifications in mountaineering, paddling, wilderness first aid, avalanche safety and even hang gliding. This ensures that customers get the very best outdoor skills training in a safe and fun environment.
What's Great
Take a class to learn canoeing, paddle boarding, backcountry cooking, mountain biking, wilderness first aid, and how to repair your equipment. In winter visit the Skate Shop located beside the Seasons of Bowness Park restaurant. Rent skates, ice bikes, or get your own skates sharpened. While indoor climbing remains a favorite, those seeking more adventure can enjoy ice climbing courses, where you can ascend frozen waterfalls. Challenge yourself with comprehensive Avalanche Skills Training (AST), led by highly certified ACMG and CAA instructors and guides who live, work, and play in the mountains.
Local Tip:
Interested in buying inexpensive equipment, the Outdoor Centre offers refurbished and repaired equipment for sale.
