EPCOR CENTRE PRESENTS National Geographic Live Exploring Mars with Kobie Boykins Tuesday, February 11, 2014 - 7:00pm EPCOR CENTRE's Jack Singer Concert Hall "I honestly feel that we will have a person standing on the surface of Mars at some point in time, because there is something that is innate in human beings...that need to explore." — Kobie Boykins A dynamic engineer at NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Kobie Boykins is on the front line of Mars exploration. Boykins recounts the challenges and triumphs of the Mars exploration rover missions, sharing remarkable images and discoveries that continue to come to us from the Red Planet. In 2004, the successful deployment of the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity launched a new era of scientific investigation of our nearest planetary neighbour. For Boykins, the rovers’ success was also a personal triumph, as he helped design and build the solar panels that enabled the rovers to continue exploring long after their planned 90-day lifecycle. Boykins is now intimately involved with NASA’s latest venture to Mars as technical group supervisor of mechanics and mobility with the Mars Science Laboratory, better known as the rover Curiosity. Curiosity landed on Mars in August, 2012 and has already made headlines with evidence that conditions on Mars, including the presence of water, could have supported life. For his work with Curiosity and other projects, Boykins received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal last year, one of the highest honors given to NASA employees and contractors.
