About the event
Join a panel of leading international scholars to explore how people engage with news across cultures, countries, and media systems.
How do we decide which news sources to trust? How do our media habits shape the way we understand the world around us? And how can we navigate an information landscape where reliable journalism, opinions, and misinformation often compete for our attention?
News is one of the main ways we make sense of public events and political developments. The ability to navigate information thoughtfully, recognize different perspectives, and make informed judgments is an essential part of civic life. In today’s changing media landscape, understanding how we engage with news matters not only to us as individuals, but also to the well-being of our communities.
Join us at Calgary Public Library’s Central Library for an engaging public panel discussion presented in partnership with the University of Calgary’s Department of Communication, Media and Film, and hear from prominent international scholars from Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Czech Republic.
Through an engaging conversation, the panelists will share insights into the changing ways people access and use news; how various audiences tackle the latest technological challenges posed by algorithms and AI; what influences their decisions to trust or not to trust; and how news practices shape worldviews and enable civic activism. Together, we’ll consider our powers and responsibilities as news users and will seek to identify strategies for navigating the news landscape that can support informed citizenship and stronger communities.
Whether you are curious about current events, interested in media and technology, or simply wondering how to make sense of the news you encounter every day, this is an opportunity to hear international perspectives, explore new ideas, and join the conversation.
