SUMMARY:Re-Sieving the News: How to Glean the Gold from the Gravel
DESCRIPTION:Join a panel of leading international scholars to explore how p
eople engage with news across cultures\, countries\, and media systems.\n\n
How do we decide which news sources to trust? How do our media habits shape
the way we understand the world around us? And how can we navigate an info
rmation landscape where reliable journalism\, opinions\, and misinformation
often compete for our attention?\n\nNews is one of the main ways we make s
ense of public events and political developments. The ability to navigate i
nformation thoughtfully\, recognize different perspectives\, and make infor
med judgments is an essential part of civic life. In today’s changing med
ia landscape\, understanding how we engage with news matters not only to us
as individuals\, but also to the well-being of our communities.\n\nJoin us
at Calgary Public Library’s Central Library for an engaging public panel
discussion presented in partnership with the University of Calgary’s Dep
artment of Communication\, Media and Film\, and hear from prominent interna
tional scholars from Canada\, the United States\, Sweden\, and Czech Republ
ic.\n\nThrough an engaging conversation\, the panelists will share insights
into the changing ways people access and use news\; how various audiences
tackle the latest technological challenges posed by algorithms and AI\; wha
t influences their decisions to trust or not to trust\; and how news practi
ces shape worldviews and enable civic activism. Together\, we’ll consider
our powers and responsibilities as news users and will seek to identify st
rategies for navigating the news landscape that can support informed citize
nship and stronger communities.\n\nWhether you are curious about current ev
ents\, interested in media and technology\, or simply wondering how to make
sense of the news you encounter every day\, this is an opportunity to hear
international perspectives\, explore new ideas\, and join the conversation
