About the event
We are pleased to invite you to Light It Up, a one-night immersive celebration at The GRAND marking Woezo Africa’s 20th anniversary and the closing of the 5th annual Black Arts Development (BAD) Program 3 Week Dance Intensive.
This is a full cultural experience of African, Caribbean, and Black arts brought to life across one unforgettable evening. Guests will experience live music and performances in the historic Lobby, a curated visual arts exhibition in the Mezzanine Gallery, and a community canvas that evolves into a collective artwork throughout the night.
The evening features a high-energy stage showcase with youth and adult dancers performing choreography in Traditional Ethiopian Dance, Kuduro, Bikutsi, Coupé Décalé, and Azonto, guided by 5 world-class international instructors. For the first time in Calgary, guest instructors Ordinateur (Paris) and Akosua Akoto (Atlanta), both internationally acclaimed and highly respected figures in the global dance sector, will also perform live.
The program also includes the premiere of a 20 year documentary reflecting Woezo Africa’s journey and impact, followed by an immersive finale and the unveiling of the completed community canvas.
We would be honoured to have you join us for this milestone celebration.
