J.S. Bach | St. Matthew Passion

Luminous Voices' performance of J.S. Bach’s masterpiece marks 300 years since it was first performed on Good Friday 1727 in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. St. Matthew Passion is considered one of the most profound and influential works of the Baroque period.

Written for double choir, double orchestra, and soloists, the work combines dramatic storytelling with reflective chorales and intimate arias that invite personal contemplation on themes of sacrifice, faith, and redemption. Today, it is widely regarded as one of Bach’s greatest masterpieces.

This performance includes our frequent collaborators, Rosa Barocca, having performed major works together including Bach’s St. John Passion, B Minor Mass and Monteverdi Vespers. A stellar cast of soloists round out what will be one of the classical concerts of the year in Calgary and beyond.
