What is the FINA Diving Grand Prix – Canada Cup?

The FINA Diving Grand Prix is a world-class event that is held annually around the world. This year, events take place in Germany, Spain, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore, and right here in Canada.

Calgary hosted the Canadian leg of the event for the first time in 2018, and will also have the pleasure of welcoming the event in 2019.

This is the preeminent event to see some of our country’s best athletes compete in an energetic diving competition. Think of this event as the ultimate event for divers in the world, and Calgary hosts one of the events as part of the FINA global competition.

What does the event involve?

The FINA Diving Grand Prix provides international diving elite with a high-level competition that takes place in countries or locations with a strong tradition in the sport.

Athletes compete in a sustained competition program that includes women’s and men’s 3m springboard, 10m platform, 3m springboard synchro and 10m platform synchro.

Over four days, you’ll be able to some of the world’s best athletes, and the atmosphere at Repsol means you get a very intimate experience watching these top performers in competition.

What does the event mean for the athletes?

The athletes get a chance to show the power, grace and acrobatics of their sport and to inspire junior divers from all over the country. Their performances at the FINA Diving Grand Prix have an incidence on their world ranking, as they compete not only for medals, but also for points.

Who will you see in action?

Approximately 125 divers from 15+ countries will participate in the competition. Amongst them, Calgary’s own Caeli McKay, a 2017 World Champions team member and a 2016 senior national champion and three-time Olympic medalist Meaghan Benfeito.

Who should go and what is the experience like?

Canadians of all ages are invited to this world-class event to enjoy the spectacular sport of diving in a dramatic international setting. Diving is the summer discipline that has produced the highest number of Olympic medals for Canada since 2000.

Calgarians will be especially interested as the city has been a prolific contributor to the success of Canadian diving over the years with the likes of Olympic medalist Blythe Hartley and world champion Eryn Bulmer.

If you haven’t been to a diving event before, you should check it out. The energy at events like the FINA Diving Grand Prix is unmatched, and you’ll be cheering for athletes as the crowd goes wild. It is a very unique sporting event to witness, and it feels like you are part of the competition as you witness elite divers in this world-class event.

It’s hard to describe how energetic events like this are until you go, but think of the most energetic sports crowd you’ve been a part of, and elevate that, and you’ll know what to expect at a diving competition.

How can I go to the event?
