Pizza can be a controversial topic. We all have our preferences when it comes to crust thickness, crispiness, the type and distribution of toppings and where the cheese is layered in relation to the sauce. Pizza is personal, but whether you’re looking for a family pizza night or a sophisticated meal, restaurants on this list are bound to suit your pizza fancy when you’re looking for a slice in Calgary.

Acme Pizza Co.
A relatively new player on the Calgary pizza scene, Acme deals in highly flavourful hand-built artisanal pizza. The pies are relatively thin and sized to feed a hungry person (or a pair of people looking for a moderate snack) and stacked with quality ingredients. The combinations are creative — Italian meats, cheese, and veggies with the addition of things like walnut cream, pickled jalapeño, or honey — without being weird. Pick up a pie to take home at the Renfrew location or enjoy one with a beer at the location in Tailgunner Brewing.
Address: 1602 10 Ave SW (in Tailgunner Brewing) or 1025 Russet Rd NE
Actually Pretty Good
This cheekily named pizza company is the brainchild of Brett McDermott who also owns the popular Our Daily Brett market café. This is another relatively thin-crust style, topped with thoughtful and flavour-packed ingredients. With playful names like The Hoser (pepperoni, chili bacon, mushrooms, and a hot maple drizzle) and Nashville North (fried chicken and gorgonzola ranch) the pizzas are as fun to order as they are to eat. Gluten-friendly crust and plant-based cheeses are also available.
Address: 2509 14 St SW or 1327 1 St SW (inside the First Street Market) note: third location opening in Crescent Heights in April
Bow Tie Pizza
A Calgary success story, Bow Tie Pizza has four locations, giving this independent take-out business great coverage of the entire city. As self-declared pizza nerds, the Bow Tie team specializes in the elusive not-too-thin but not-too-thick slow-rise crust, baking everything in an ultra-hot stone deck oven for perfectly crisp pizzas. They top their pizzas with fresh produce, local hand-sliced meats, and a two-cheese blend to create classic topping combinations and specialty pies like the Mother of Dragons (for those who like to get spicy) and the Greek-inspired Beard of Zeus.

Cold Beer and Pizza
Sometime the name really does say it all: this Beltline hotspot serves great pizza, local beers, and a whole lot of fun. The beers are a selection of local favourites and the pizza is Roman style: thick (but not Detroit-style thick) and fluffy and cut into rectangular slices. Whether you order by the slice or by the metre or half-metre the pizza is generously topped and comes in both red and white varieties. While Cold Beer and Pizza is great any time of the year it gets especially hoppin’ during the warmer months as people flock to its cool wrap-around patio.
Address: 1019 17 Ave SW #102
Connie and John’s Pizza
Brought to you by Conne DeSousa and John Jackson, the co-chefs behind the award-winning Charcut and Charbar restaurants, Connie and John ’s makes both thin and floppy New York-style and deep-dish Detroit-style pizzas. The chefs wanted pizza that could be taken seriously with high-quality toppings and a chef’s touch, while still being a lot of fun. This is pizza designed with takeaway in mind and it always tastes great on the go.
Address: 618 Confluence Way SE (inside the Simmons Building), 2044 33 Ave SW (inside Blush Lane), 482 Mclaurin St NW (inside the Alt Hotel)
Double Zero Pizza
Another thin-crust option, Double Zero Pizza has the added convenience of being located in CF Chinook Centre but it is a far cry from typical mall food. The hand-rolled pizza dough is made daily with imported 00 flour then left to ferment for four days, making for a very light and airy crust that is then stacked with high quality Italian ingredients. All of the topping combinations are delicious, but the cult favourite among locals has got to be the mortadella pizza, topped with pistachio, basil and mascarpone cheese.

Noble Pie
Noble Pie started as a brewery pop-up fuelled by then-amateur pizza maker Mike Lange’s lifelong fascination with the great pizzas of the U.S., particularly New York-style pies. The demand for Noble Pie’s foldable pizza, topped with authentic cupping pepperoni, hot honey, and other simple but mighty ingredients was so overwhelming that Lange and his partner Leslie Lamont eventually opened a full-scale pizzeria. Lange approaches his pizza with the utmost seriousness — to him it’s both a science and an art — but with its retro styling and thoughtful wine list, Noble Pie is also a whole lot of fun.
Address: 720 11 Ave SW (back alley entrance)
Pizzaface
This cool pizzeria started life as a pop-up in restaurants all over town before launching into a more consistent takeout business in the pizza-heavy days of 2020 and gaining popularity as one of the first pizza places in the city to offer a dill pickle-topped pie. Nowadays Pizzaface has its own dine-in spot on 17th Avenue SW, serving up thin-ish crust pizzas like the Tony’s Classic Roni (named after co-founder Tony Migliarese, who also owns the also very popular DOPO restaurant and Bar Rocca wine bar), the aforementioned Mike’s Pickle with crunchy pickles and garlic cream, and other savoury delights, topped with potato, artichoke, caramelized onions and other high-end ingredients.

Pizza Culture
Being recognized by Italian pizza officials is no small feat. Pulcinella
Certified by the Associazione Pizzaioli Napolitani in Italy, Pulcinella serves thin-crust pizzas that are meant to be eaten with a knife and fork, just like they do in Naples. Proprietor Domenic Tudda grew up working in his parents’ restaurant, the legendary Stromboli Inn, which was in the same Kensington location where Pulcinella sits today, so he knows his pizza. Pulcinella also serves pasta and Italian antipasti and traditional pasta dishes.

Seniore’s
Tucked away in a residential strip mall in the neighbourhood of Beddington, Seniore’s regularly sees a line out its door because its thick-crust pizza is just that iconic. While their traditional pizzas are all great, the real attraction here is the donair pizza, smothered in donair meat, cheese, and a sweet donair sauce.

Spiros Pizza
You can’t talk about pizza in Calgary without mentioning Greek-style pizza, by far the most ubiquitous style of pizza in the city until thin-crust took over in the mid-‘00s. Spiros Pizza is a Calgary classic, serving up thick cheese-laden slices topped with pepperoni, ham, mushrooms and other classic pizza toppings.

Tops Pizza & Steakhouse South
One of Calgary’s most beloved neighbourhood pizzerias, Tops was founded over 50 years ago by Greek immigrant George Tsoulamanis, who came to Canada with a dream and a vision of ultra-thick and cheesy pizza.
