Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump Interpretive Centre

Stampeding buffaloes can reach speeds of up to 50 km/hour – that’s just one of many things to learn when you visit Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump Interpretive Centre. The site is one of the world's largest, oldest, and best-preserved buffalo jumps in the world. A treasure trove of prehistoric artifacts and information about archeology, the centre's exhibits include a detailed look at the prehistoric life in the area, buffalo hunt ceremonies and the ecology of the region. Discover the culture of buffalo hunting through five exhibits that let you learn more about the art of driving the herds off the cliffs, the death of buffalo hunting culture, and the work done by various archaeologists. Allow approximately two hours for your visit, and take in the viewpoints and interpretive panels outside the Centre. Before visiting, be sure to check the weather as they may temporarily close depending on the severity of the condition. As cafeteria service is closed for 2024, the indoor seating area will remain open for guests to enjoy their packed snacks or something from the onsite vending machines. The site including the upper outdoor trail, is fully wheelchair accessible with wheelchairs available onsite to borrow during your visit.
