I never turn down the chance for a fishing adventure and Calgary has some of the best spots around. There’s no better way to spend a day than chilling out on the Bow River, especially when it cuts right through a cool city like Calgary.

Tourism Calgary offered me the chance to explore the best of the city on a weekend getaway where I also got to cast my line within a few minutes of an awesome big city.

Fishing the Bow River

My dad taught me how to fish long before I started skiing and I am always ready for a new fishing experience. My friend and favourite fishing guide Dee Chatani from Trout Chasers River Company showed me the incredible fishing you can do right in Calgary. Catching massive rainbow and brown trout on the Bow River and looking up to realize you are right in the city is unlike anything I have ever experienced.

Checking in to Hotel Arts

After a long day of fishing, my mom joined me in Calgary and we checked in to Hotel Arts, a super unique boutique hotel right in the heart of the city. We spent some time checking out the amazing artwork in the lobby and made a toast with a welcome drink at Yellow Door Bistro, right in the hotel, to our mother daughter weekend getaway in Calgary.

Dinner at Bridgette Bar

From the vintage BMW motorcycle on the wall to the amazing menu, Bridgette Bar was perfect for my Instagram story. We started with a super fresh Cucumber Salad and absolutely loved the Wagyu Beef Carpaccio with mushrooms. Mom and I were both full from the amazing meal but not full enough to pass up the banana cream pie for dessert!

Breakfast at Yellow Door Bistro

We started the second day of our Calgary adventure with breakfast at Yellow Door Bistro. It’s always great to start your day relaxing at the hotel with a great breakfast so you can plan your day with an espresso in hand. After breakfast, we took advantage of Hotel Arts’ in house bike program and got setup with some Brooklyn Cruisers to explore the city.

Macaron Class at Ollia Macarons & Tea

Next up was a macaron baking class at Ollia Macarons & Tea with owner David Rousseau. It’s always fun to meet the locals when you are travelling. David taught us about the history of macarons and how to make raspberry and chocolate macarons filled with delicious gnash that made me realize what a delicacy they are. It was so special to experience an activity with my mom that would could both enjoy together.

Shopping on 17th Avenue and Biking Downtown

It wouldn’t be a mother daughter trip without some shopping time! After our macaron class, we explored the shops and boutiques along 17th Ave. We hopped back on our bikes and took the bike paths to Prince’s Island Park for a river inspired lunch at River Café.

Lunch at River Café

River Café is a fly fisher’s dream! From the vintage fishing rods on the walls to the fresh seafood on the menu, it makes sense that River Café calls the Bow River home. We made a toast with a champagne cocktail and ordered fresh shucked oysters and a cheese plate with house made berry jam.

Discovering Calgary’s River Surfing Scene

Calgary is full of hidden gems and I had no idea you could surf in the same river I was fishing in the day before. River surfers hop in the Bow River right under the 10th Street Bridge and ride an endless wave you can easily see from the pedestrian pathway. The coolest part? The girls were shredding harder than the guys! I’ll be ready to hop in the water and try river surfing the next time I visit Calgary.

Dinner at Foreign Concept

We capped off an amazing day exploring the city with dinner at Foreign Concept and met chef and owner Duncan Ly, another inspired entrepreneur in Calgary. The Chili Lemongrass Tofu and Gochujang Albacore Tuna Poké were both super fresh and delicious. We finished dinner with a trio of ice cream, matcha, coconut, and mango, and made one last toast to our amazing weekend adventure in Calgary.
