4. Stand on a glass floor (if you dare)

Test your bravery by standing on the Calgary Tower’s glass floor. Spanning 11 metres by 1.4 metres, the glass floor hovers over traffic on 9th Avenue SW and Centre Street. A gift for Alberta’s centennial, the glass floor is made up of 5 panels that are 5.7 cm thick and each weigh 238 kg. The glass floor has been a staple at the Calgary Tower since its installation in 2005.

And don’t worry – even a hippo could stand on the glass floor safely!

8. The Tower fills the city with music

As you approach the base of the Calgary Tower during the lunch hour, you’ll notice a selection of music playing from the digital carillon bells. Additionally, the carillon marks every hour by chiming on the hour.

The original Carillon Bells were gifted to the city in 1973 from the Dutch Canadian Centennial Committee in celebration of Calgary’s centennial, but also as a thank you for the liberation of the Netherlands during the Second World War. Renovations in 1989 necessitated the removal of the bells, but they have been faithfully recreated with a digital carillon bell.

9. Floating with other giants in Calgary’s centre

As a founding member of the World Federation of Great Towers, the Calgary Tower stands 191 metres above the downtown core. And while it was surpassed as Calgary’s tallest building in 1983, by Petro Canada’s West Tower (now known as the Suncor Energy Centre's West Tower), its height and design still makes you feel as if you’re floating in the air.

10. The Tower is an Olympic torch

The Olympics and the Calgary Tower go hand-in-hand. Since hosting the Winter Olympic games in 1988, the Calgary Tower has lit its Olympic torch at the top of the tower for every successive Olympic games to mark the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as for 1 hour each day that Canada wins at least one gold medal.
