Introduction to Miyake Taiko Workshops

Calgary Miyake Renshu Kai’s 3-hour Introduction to Miyake Taiko workshop covers the fundamentals of stance, grip, rhythms and choreography. It’s open to complete beginners ages 12+ and no experience necessary!

Calgary Miyake Renshu Kai is a regional practice branch of Canada Miyake Taiko Kai, with direct ties to the Tsumura family’s Miyakejima Geinou Doushikai in Japan. Miyake Taiko is a style of drumming where performers hold a deep squat at the level of the drum, play it from both sides, and move their whole body. The music combines repeating rhythms, chanting and group choreography into a powerful display of a traditional art.
