About the event
Join artist Emma Goudie with co-facilitator Lara Ahmed for Intro to Modern Bojagi! Working in pairs, participants are invited to reflect on our current exhibitions and engage in collaborative art-making, in this workshop led by artist and Esker Programs and Volunteer Coordinator, Emma Goudie and artist Lara Ahmed. Participants will learn about the history, cultural significance, and modern sewing techniques of Korean wrapping cloths, bojagi 보자기 , in this introductory lesson to a centuries-old craft. Traditionally made from leftover fabric scraps, bojagi involves piecing together textiles to create something new and meaningful. Crafts such as bojagi embody traditional matrilineal knowledge with skills passed down through making rather than through language. For Zadie Xa, the use of bojagi situates her practice within a historical lineage of craft production and honours the women in her life. All materials and tools will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own fabrics from home, especially materials with personal significance or pieces they wish to reuse, as they gather and work together to explore contemporary sewing techniques and the expressive potential of cloth as a form of storytelling and connection. Registration essential. Best suited for ages 16 and over. Important note: Please register with an email address that you monitor regularly. You will receive a confirmation email prior to the program. You must reply to the email to confirm your attendance. If you are not able to confirm, your spot will be offered to the waitlist. This new system has been implemented for workshops to ensure as few tickets as possible go unused. We very much appreciate your cooperation and look forward to seeing you at the program!
