SUMMARY:Book Launch: Feminist Making\, Doing\, and Sensing
DESCRIPTION:This event is a celebration of the new collection\, Feminist Ma
king\, Doing\, and Sensing: Experiments in Philosophy\, published in July b
y Duke University Press.  Ada Jaarsma\, co-editor of the collection\, will
facilitate interactive activities and conversation that draw out the embod
ied\, creative\, and collaborative aspects of feminist making. The gatherin
g will be moderated by Wendi Adamek\, who holds a chair in Buddhist Studies
at the University of Calgary. \n\nAUTHOR BIOS\n\nAda Jaarsma is professor
of Philosophy at Mount Royal University\, where she teaches feminist philo
sophy\, existentialism and queer studies.  \n\nWendi Adamek is professor
and Numata Chair in Buddhist Studies at the University of Calgary\, where s
he teaches Buddhist ethics\, feminist systems theory\, and medieval Chinese
Buddhism.  \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n\nPlacing pressure on what it means to
do” feminist philosophy\, Feminist Making\, Doing\, and Sensing offers a
n innovative and critical rethinking of feminist philosophical practice and
feminist philosophy as a disciplinary field of thought. The collection rai
ses questions about how disciplines are made\, how philosophy gets done\, a
nd the collaborative nature of thinking. Seeking to decenter disciplinary n
orms about content\, authority\, and belonging\, this collection disrupts t
he status quo of feminist philosophy through its insistence on formal exper
imentation and creative methods as well as its refusal to take philosophy a
nd its disciplinary attachments at face value. \n\nThe essays argue for wa
ys of thinking\, making\, and doing philosophy that are participatory\, rel
 ational\, somatic\, affective\, sonorous\, and sensorial\, often looking to
experimental and art-based practices such as film\, music\, poetry\, comed
y\, crocheting\, and more. Meant to encourage a collaborative dialogue with
readers\, several essays conclude with prompts\, exercises\, and activitie
s\, inviting readers to participate in creative philosophical making alongs
 ide their own practices.\n\nhttps://www.visitcalgary.com/events/book-launch
