Calgary continuing to work towards hosting X Games beginning in 2021

X Games are projected to inject $75 million to Calgary’s economy annually

Oct. 27, 2019 - Earlier this year, Calgary secured the rights to host X Games – a globally-recognized youth lifestyle, music and action sports festival – for a minimum three-year commitment. Diligent work continues to bring this exciting event to our city beginning in 2021.

It has been critically important to the many partners involved that the complexities and timelines of hosting this high-profile event are considered and in the best interests of our city and province.

“Hosting X Games in Calgary beginning in 2021 offers all partners the time necessary to prepare to host and share our city and venues with a global audience,” says Carson Ackroyd, Senior Vice President, Sales, Tourism Calgary. “It also allows us to continue to work with key stakeholders, including the Government of Alberta to ensure the economic benefits of this significant event are realized.”

“Being the first Canadian city to host this energetic, multi-faceted and city-wide event will be a game- changer for Calgary,” says Ackroyd. “This caliber of event reinforces Calgary’s commitment to be a winter sport city and to create opportunities for local youth to experience elite-level competition.”

X Games Calgary will activate and energize the entire city with top Canadian music talent, family-focused sport and cultural activities and Calgary artists and winter sport athletes showcasing their talents. It is estimated that hosting X Games will contribute $75 million annually to Calgary’s economy, with 75,000 annual spectators, including 10,000 out-of-region visitors.
