Budget-friendly Activities and Experiences

Calgary has a host of no-cost or low-cost attractions for you and your delegates to enjoy. Below are just a few of our favourite experiences – check out our Free Things To Do In Calgary list for even more options.

Central Library – The latest jewel in Calgary’s architectural crown, directly east of City Hall, is quite simply jaw dropping and definitely worth an immersive visit. General or architectural tours are offered over the noon hour, Mondays through Saturdays. You can book online – advisable as numbers are limited and for this  very popular tour. The library also has a performance hall (seating capacity: 336) and meeting rooms for rent.

Devonian Gardens – is an urban oasis found in the middle of the downtown core, accessible from the Core Shopping Centre. The glass enclosed space covers an entire city block, with approximately 2.5 acres of botanical gardens. This peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the city is home to over 500 trees and 50 varieties of plants and is open year-round.

Nose Hill Park – located in northwest Calgary, this 11 sq km (4.25 sq mi) park is culturally and historically significant. Look for the Siksikaitsitapi medicine wheel built by the Blood Tribe in 2015. The Siksikaitsitapi logo represents the four tribes of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Blood, Siksika, and Northern and Southern Peigan tribes). You are welcome to leave a small, appropriate offer at the center. Enjoy the hiking trails as you pass through the rough fescue grasslands, one of the few ecosystems of its kind remaining on the prairies. The sweeping views against the looming city skyline will take your breath away.

The RiverWalk  – Calgary has the most extensive urban pathway and cycle path network in North America, with approximately 1,000 km (621 mi) of trails. Enjoy a lazy afternoon meandering along the Bow and Elbow rivers or take advantage of the pathways to easily access the trendy neighbourhoods in and around the downtown core. Looking to escape into nature – follow the path network onto St. Patrick’s Island or Prince’s Island Park for plenty of hiking and biking trails, birding hotspots and even swimming holes for those hot summer days.
