Your Calgary Zoo is back – and Zoolights too!
Calgary, AB – Zoo officials are delighted to announce today that the Calgary Zoo will reopen completely on Thursday, November 28, 2013.
“I have been anxiously anticipating the day when I could announce to our community that their Calgary Zoo is back,” said Dr. Clément Lanthier, President and CEO. “From the time of the flood in June, I have witnessed a remarkable team of staff and volunteers working diligently and passionately to bring the zoo back to what it was and I believe in many ways our community will find that it’s better than ever. I am so proud of the monumental feat they have achieved in such a short time.”
The devastating flood that occurred on June 21st caused over $50 million in building and infrastructure damage – primarily to the St. George’s Island portion of the zoo. While the northern portion of the zoo including Canadian Wilds, Penguin Plunge and the Prehistoric Park reopened to the public on July 31st, the island and its marquee exhibits, banquet facilities and other services have been closed to the public while the extensive repairs needed have been completed.
As a fitting tribute and celebration, the Calgary Zoo will light up the very next day! Calgary’s favourite holiday tradition, Zoolights, will begin on Friday, November 29th and will run until January 4, 2014.
Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks on the exciting opening celebration on November 28th and more about this year’s Zoolights.
