Ballet. Jazz. Contemporary. West African. Calgary has a passionate dance community, and companies are doing incredible work in the city’s studios:

  • Alberta Ballet is the third-largest company in Canada, and produces some of the finest ballet in the world
  • Decidedly Jazz Danceworks is a marvellous company focused on the history and evolution of jazz
  • Dancer’s Studio West is one of the city’s premier contemporary studios, and has been staging innovative work since 1981

Whether it’s opera or punk rock, there are musicians and venues to suit every taste in Calgary. We recommend looking into the following:
  • Founded in 1972, Calgary Opera thrills audiences with both classic performances and its own commissions, performing at the Jubilee Auditorium
  • Led by internationally renowned music director Roberta Minczuk, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) is one of North America’s finest and most versatile live music ensembles
  • The indie scene is hopping…check out venues like the University’s MacEwan Hall, and clubs like Broken City and the Hi-Fi, to see local bands do their thing
