GIRAF, or the Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival (est 2005), is an annual animation festival that runs each November at the Globe Cinema in Calgary. GIRAF celebrates the spirit of independent, underground, and experimental animation, showcasing Canadian animators and presenting diverse animations from around the globe.
This year's programming includes a focus on France, Canadian shorts. late-night shorts, international shorts competition, NFB shorts and more. The Congress, directed by Ari Folman, is the opening film. The Oscar-nominated director's animation is based on Stanislaw Lem's science fiction novel and blends live action with hand-crafted animations. It stars Robin Wright and features Harvey Keitel, John Hamm and Paul Giamati.
