Trip Essentials – How to Pack for a Trip to Calgary

Being so close to the mountains means you’ll want to pack carefully for your trip to Calgary, so you don’t miss out on any adventures. Thinking lightweight and multipurpose with every item you pack is the way to go. Set yourself up for success with these 10 travel essentials.

1. LAYERS

You’ll want to be able to easily put on or peel off clothing, not just for occasional temperature fluctuations, but those inevitable spit ups and spills. A T-shirt and light sweater should do the trick nicely.

2. HAT AND SUNSCREEN

The sunny skies hovering above Calgary are sure to make your visit delightful, but care must be taken to save your skin from sunburn. Bring a baseball hat and SPF 15 to protect yourself.

3. CASUAL CLOTHES

Calgary is an unpretentious city, where suits are often replaced by jeans in the downtown core. So long as you’re neatly presentable in khakis or shorts and a clean top, you’ll be welcome at most restaurants and attractions.

4. VICTORINOX SWISS ARMY KNIFE

You won’t want to pack this handy tool in your carry-on baggage, but it’s a worthy inclusion in any suitcase. With tweezers, a toothpick, nail file, small blade and mini scissors, this all-in-one gadget offers a ton of uses for active families.

5. JACKETS

A lightweight jacket keeps you cozy should there be a slight breeze or light rain. Plus, coats can double as a pillow or blanket during your travels.

6. BATHING SUITS

Besides taking a dip in the hotel pool, you’ll want to take advantage of the many splash pads and wading pools Calgary has on tap.

7. HIKING SHOES

Unless you’re planning on scrambling in the Rockies, you won’t need above the ankle hiking boots. Still, a robust pair of hiking shoes ensures you can venture beyond paved trails to explore the city’s river valley and lush parkland. Tip: Budget some time to spend at Fish Creek, one of the largest urban parks in North America.

8. ANTIBACTERIAL HAND GEL

Proper hand washing is an art form, so cut yourself some slack on vacation. Squirt a little of this magic soap on your kid’s palms to ensure they’re germ-free.

9. CHANGE OF CLOTHES

Spills tend to send little people spiraling. Keeping a spare change of clothes stored in a ziplock bag quickly remedies the situation and allows what’s wet or soiled to be safely sealed away.

10. WET WIPES

Savvy parents know these all-purpose wipes perform double duty, wiping up spills, disinfecting surfaces and thoroughly cleaning sticky fingers when you can’t get to a sink. Stash a travel size pack in your purse and your clothes won’t have to act as a napkin.
