This year, Alberta is proud to welcome the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and Calgary is thrilled to host the best junior hockey players in the world on one tournament stage.
The 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place from December 25th, 2011 to January 5th, 2012 in Alberta at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary and Rexall Place in Edmonton.
Beyond the game, the city will be alive with energy. Check out some of the great events taking place.

2012 World Juniors Hockey Headquarters

World Junior Championship Kick-Off Rally
A kick-off rally will be held at Edmonton’s City Hall Auditorium to kick off the arrival of the tournament to the Province of Alberta. The event will be free of charge and open to the public. The event is also expected to have a large media contingency, with live TV remotes for Noon newscasts.

Hockey Day in Calgary
Celebrate 100 years of Recreation as The City of Calgary Recreation kicks off its 100th anniversary with Hockey Day in Calgary in partnership with the 2012 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships at Olympic Plaza on January 1st, 2012. Hockey Day in Calgary is a free, family friendly New Year’s Day celebration at the Municipal Building and at Olympic Plaza on Sunday January 1st. The day kicks off at 11 a.m. with public skating, a ball hockey tournament with NHL alumni, entertainment, and arts and hockey demonstrations until 2 p.m. Speeches will take place at 12:00 p.m.

Beer Gardens
Fans will have the opportunity to take part in the beer gardens throughout the championship. The beer gardens will allow WJC organizers to entertain adult guests in a unique way, primarily before, during and after the games.

Fan Zone
The WJC Fan Zone will provide a fun, interactive, hockey oriented entertainment experience for ticket holders before, between and after games. The WJC Fan Zone will celebrate, educate and engage fans on the rich history of the game on a local, provincial, national and international level. Admission is free and is sure to be a destination of choice for pre and post-game activity.

Gasoline Alley Museum’s Winter CARnival
Test your hockey skills at the Three Star Shoot Out, or challenge your family to a classic game of table hockey. Learn about Gasoline Alley’s colourful gas pump collection while on a scavenger hunt for IIHF team jerseys, and make your own paper Zamboni or create a 3D truck with a team logo on it. Build a snow castle out of giant foam blocks; take the Winter Road Trip Challenge and show off your throwing and sweeping skills at the Gasoline Alley Floor Curling Bonspiel.
Remember to bring your skates and take the fun outdoors to Heritage Park’s free skating rink in Heritage Town Square. Warm up with a hot drink and fresh baking or a light lunch at the Railway Cafe and do a little post-Christmas shopping in the unique shops in the Haskayne Mercantile Block.
