If you’re looking for a serene spot free of modern day stressors, where kids can just be kids again, take this as your cue to head to Heritage Park. Families find it easy to dial it down at this historical village, while creating lasting memories. Here are five memorable ways to reconnect.

1. LEARN TO BE A VOYAGEUR

Do you have what it takes to become a voyageur? Find out at the Hudson Bay Company Fur Trading Fort during a fun training session where families practice precise paddling and belt out voyageur diddies.

2. SUGARCOAT YOUR STAY

Baking from scratch has become something of a lost art, so consider it your parental duty to visit the bakery. Will you tuck into freshly baked cheese buns or gooey butter tarts still warm from the oven? Just don’t forget to hit up the Candy Store, where brown paper bags can be filled with an assortment of brightly coloured penny candies to savour throughout the day.

3. TAKE THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED

Take your treats on a relaxing ride as you explore new areas of the park, either on a horse-drawn wagon ride or century-old steam train, as it winds its way past three stations (much to the delight of Thomas the Tank fans!). Should petite pioneers get pooped out, revive them with a rest on the paddle wheel boat, as it completes a leisurely circle in the Glenmore Reservoir.

4. EXPLORE THE FIRST NATIONS ENCAMPMENT

First Nations interpreters lead hands-on activities based on centuries old traditions. Kids   feel like they’ve accomplished something after helping raise a tipi, learning to shoot a bow and arrow and trying their hand at tradition First Nations games.

5. CONQUER THE MIDWAY

Step back into an old fashioned carnival setting, as the scent of popcorn wafts past antique midway rides. Stunning views of both the mountains and city scape are found on the ferris wheel, or steal a kiss on the Caterpillar, just as they did in the Edwardian era. There’s even rides for the very wee-ones and plenty of retro games to try your luck at.
