For the past 47 years, The Calgary Tower has been a prominent part of the Calgary skyline. In fact, since it was built, the tower has evolved with the city and now features a thrilling glass floor, a world-class restaurant and a new LED light show. But, on top of being an amazing attraction, it’s also had its fair share of fame, not that it’s that let that go to its head. To help celebrate one of the city’s coolest attractions, we’ve gathered together some of it’s most famous cameos!

EXIT WOUNDS

Over the years, lots of movies have used Calgary to stand in for other cities.  In 2001, Steven Seagal and DMX did just that for their movie Exit Wounds. It was a gritty drama about dirty cops and corruption. The film took place in Detroit, but eagle-eyed film buffs could easily spot Calgary landmarks, including The Calgary Tower.

SUPERMAN 3

Back in 1983, Christopher Reeve, Richard Pryor, Margot Kidder starred in the third Superman movie, and subsequently gave our tower it’s biggest cameo. Even though everyone knows that Superman lives in Metropolis, it was almost impossible to ignore the countless Calgary landmarks featured in the movie, including the infamous King Eddy, the C-Train and the Calgary Tower.

COOL RUNNINGS

Every now and then, Calgary gets to play itself in the movies, like in the 1993 Disney movie Cool Runnings, which tells the story of the first ever Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Olympic games, which were hosted right here in Calgary!  In one of the film’s most famous scenes, we see the team as they are quickly forced to adjust to the temperature difference from Jamaica to Calgary. You’ll spot the Calgary Tower as the team lands in our fair city.

WAYDOWNTOWN

Calgary’s +15 system is world famous and in 2000, they were actually subject to hilarious movie called Waydowntown.   The movie asks a simple question: “How long can you go without stepping foot outside?”  The film stars Fab Filippo, Don McKellar and Marya Delver and its opening scene features the Calgary skyline, including the Calgary Tower being lifted into its own little bubble. So what do you think, how long could you live in the +15 system?

Bonus:

Sure the Calgary Tower has had its fair share of cameos in some pretty big movies, but did you know it was also once featured in the X-Men comic books? Back in 1979, in an issue entitled: ““Wanted: Wolverine, Dead or Alive!” The Prime Minster wants Wolverine caught (yes, you read that right) and the international battle of the mutants ends up at the base of the Calgary Tower. If we hadn’t read it myself, we wouldn’t have believed it either.
