The box office is open for the latest edition of the Calgary International Film Festival. Featuring over 200 feature and short films, this year’s festival showcases filmmakers from around the world in a city known for hosting movie makers in a big way. CIFF is the ultimate movie buff’s experience that warrants a trip to the city during the height of film festival season.

In between hitting the red carpet and witnessing tomorrow’s Oscar winners before they hit theatres, why not check out the locations where some of the biggest blockbusters and critically acclaimed flicks were filmed?

Here are 8 filming locations you can visit around Calgary that you’ll recognize from some of your favourite movies and television series:   

1. The Revenant (2015)

Acclaimed director Alejandro Iñárritu brought Leonardo DiCaprio to the beauty of Kananaskis Country and the Canadian Badlands for the backdrop of his wilderness epic. See the vistas of The Revenant and steer clear of the bears in Dinosaur Provincial Park and Kananaskis Country for a unique silver screen experience. 

2. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Look up to the same bronco busting saddles Jake Gyllenhaal checked out at Ranchman’s, one of Calgary’s favourite Western style dancehalls and one of the bars used for this famous love story where Jack met Lureen, breaking everyone’s heart (including Ennis).

3. Superman (1978)

Look up, look way up, and capture the views of downtown Calgary that made it the perfect stand in for the Manhattan skyline. Head to the top of the Calgary Tower and see where the prairies meet the mountains from Clark Kent’s perspective.

4. Fargo (2014-present)

Calgary has the hidden gems and quirky characters the Cohen Brothers would appreciate. Named Canada’s greatest neighbourhood, Inglewood often serves as the backdrop for the television reimagining of the classic film. Grab a slice at Inglewood Pizza (as featured in the series) for the ultimate small screen experience.

6. Cool Runnings (1993)

7. The Assassination of Jesse James (2007)

All aboard the locomotive at Heritage Park that will make you feel like the most infamous bank robber in the history of the world. Filmed on location at Heritage Park, Brad Pitt and the rest of the crew took to the classic train for this western epic.

8. Heartland (2007-present)

This year, CIFF celebrates the longest-running hour-long drama in the history of Canada television with a retrospective on a decade of Heartland. Showcase Alberta features a screening of the first episode of season 10 and a chance to meet the cast.

Tour High River, the Home of Heartland, for an up close look into the backdrop of the popular television series. Located in the foothills of southern Alberta, High River is filled with familiar streetscapes and locations of the fictional community of Hudson.
