Boxing Day is a great way to get bargains and Calgary is the perfect spot to load up on anything and everything your heart desires.

Here are 11 ways you can make sure your shopping time is maximized.

1. Have a shopping spree for free!

If you stay in a participating hotel, you’ll get a $75 gift card for CF Chinook Centre, the CORE, or CrossIron Mills for every night you stay from Thursday-Sunday, up to three nights. For example, if you stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Hotel, you’ll get a $75 gift card for every night you stay. So if you stay 3 nights, you’ll get $225 in gift cards to spend at any of the three malls, and a great weekend stay. Check out all the great spots you can stay for this great deal!

2. Find out the deals online before you go

Many shopping centres list a collection of deals online for retailers inside the mall, which allows you to make a plan for savings before getting to the mall. Check out the promotions pages from CF Chinook Centre, CF Market Mall, the CORE, CrossIron Mills, and Sunridge Mall before you figure out which stores you should tackle.

3. Pick an anchor store as your anchor and let the deals follow

Pick an anchor store to focus on and let the deals flow from there. For example, if you’re into deals on luxury goods, why not check out Nordstrom as your first stop and then roam through CF Chinook Centre, with many other luxury stores like Tiffany & Co.? Or if you want some great deals on outdoor gear, head to Western Canada’s only Bass Pro Shop at CrossIron Mills, and then get great bargains at spots like Hockey Life and Mountain Warehouse.

4. There’s more options than the food court

Double Zero Pizza

Calgary’s mall dining has undergone a revolution. With options like Double Zero – one of the country’s hottest pizza restaurants in CF Chinook Centre, National – a local favourite for great beer and good times in the CORE and Westhills, and Phil & Sebastian – putting Calgary’s coffee culture on the national stage – you will not only find great bargains at shopping locations in Calgary, but also great food! Check out a spot like Double Zero just before or after the noon lunch rush to avoid crowds in the stores and the restaurant, and have a great meal with a side of shopping.

5. Park like a pro

Downtown Calgary is one of the busiest districts in Canada for automobile traffic, but on Boxing Day, driving in the city centre is a breeze! Not only does the hustle and bustle from office workers disappear, but parking is ample and free next to central shopping hotspots like Bankers Hall, the CORE, Kensington, and 17th Ave. Boxing Day parking is also a dream Downtown thanks to the CORE’s valet parking, where you’ll leave your car at one of the main entrances.

6. Or leave the car at home

Calgary Transit

The Calgary region has a great transit network provided by Calgary Transit and Airdrie Transit to all of the major shopping areas in and around Calgary. Additionally, being one of the world’s leading car2go cities, many malls, such as CF Chinook Centre, provide designated spots for this popular car sharing service that’s easy to sign up for as both a local and visitor to Calgary (note it takes 1-2 business days to process a car2go membership).

7. Take advantage of deals on everything in a shopping centre

Not only do retailers offer great deals on Boxing Day, but so do service providers like salons. Calgary’s large shopping centres provide many opportunities for great experiences on everything from a massage to a hot shave while you search for bargains.

8. Don’t limit yourself to the malls

Big box stores like IKEA, Wal-Mart, and Costco provide great deals on items you won’t try on and carry in a shopping bag, but Calgary has many districts to explore if this is what you’re looking for! Deerfoot Meadows is one of the best places to set yourself up, and the nearby Hotel Blackfoot allows you to shop during the day and spend a night entertained at the Laugh Shop. Or, check out 17th Ave, which houses trendy local merchants, great Western brands like gravitypope, and international retailers like Best Buy

9. Show up early for special promotions

Many stores offer things like gifts, extra savings, or food and beverage offerings to the first shoppers through the doors. These can also be easily planned as most early bird specials are usually listed on the promotions pages in tip #2 above.

10. Expand beyond Boxing Day

Don’t think you are limited to one day sales on Boxing Day in Calgary. Stores will often extend their deals to as late as January 1 for Boxing Day specials.

11. Get the VIP visitor treatment at guest services

Get the VIP shopping treatment and take advantage of the guest services booth in any Calgary mall. Some malls even offer special savings for tourists. CrossIron Mills offers a passport to savings for visitors to Calgary and can even sell you a Parks Canada pass, meaning you can avoid the lineups on a day trip to Banff!
