Canadian En[tour]preneur Experience

Seth Munoz from Tourism Calgary, was one of 50 participants selected from nearly 700 Canadian applicants to participate in a tourism and entrepreneurship experience in Ottawa.

"On the first day, we met industry leaders and were welcomed by the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Tourism and Small Business. She spoke about Canada's diverse mix of race, economic and educational backgrounds and the strength that this diversity affords us. Marcela Diaz from Tourism Industry Association of Canada, TIAC, discussed the importance of connecting with government and tourism advocacy groups to further advance tourism's profile as an economic driver in Canada. Sharma Raina from Business Development Bank of Canada, discussed resources available to small tourism start-ups like business planning, website assessments, low cost business software and a plethora of available research and data to help tailor messages to your key audience.

The theme of diversity continued over the next two days as we experienced an indigenous Pow wow and explored Ottawa.

Our afternoons were spent working on group activities, which included a research project about how to engage millennials. This provided us with an opportunity to connect with Canadian youth pursuing a future in tourism and set us up for future opportunities to collaborate. We presented our proposal to Minister Chagger and a large panel of industry leaders, who provided great advice and constructive criticism to all groups.

After an intensive three-day conference, Minister Chagger invited us to her office at Parliament Hill, thanked us for participating and reminded us that, 'better is always possible. I left feeling like small tourism business in Canada is valued and supported by the federal government.'"
