Calgary is Home to Tonight’s Top Chef Canada Finale

Tourism Calgary works to drive visitation from receptive Toronto market

Calgary, June 10, 2013 – Calgary provides the backdrop and stage for the Top Chef Canada season three finale airing Monday, June 10 at 9p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT exclusively on Food Network Canada. As part of a unique partnership with Shaw Media and Food Network’s highest rated program, Top Chef Canada, Tourism Calgary will showcase Calgary to a national audience hungry for stories about culinary destinations. This partnership marks the first time in the show’s history that filming has been located outside of Ontario.

The Top Chef Canada season three Calgary-based finale airs June 10 at 9 p.m. ET - 7 p.m. MT - 10 p.m. PT only on Food Network Canada.

“Calgary’s culinary scene has become something to behold with renegade chefs in impressive, independent restaurant and food truck kitchens, making it the ideal setting for Top Chef Canada’s culinary competition. With the finale we hope to inspire visitation by portraying the energy and excitement that is palpable every time you visit our city,” says Tourism Calgary, Vice President, Marketing and Communications, Gisele Danis.

The season three finale will showcase some of Calgary’s landmarks and attractions with contestants competing in challenges at Prince’s Island Park, highlighting Calgary’s popular food trucks and at Rush Restaurant and Bar in the city’s downtown business district. Throughout the show, viewers will see cameos from some familiar local faces, such as special guest judge and Top Chef Canada season one finalist Connie DeSousa and guest tasters JUNO Award winning Singer/Songwriter and proud Calgarian Jann Arden and Rush Restaurant owner Lance Hurtubise.

As part of an integrated campaign built around the Top Chef Canada partnership, Tourism Calgary led a ‘Calgary take-over’ of Toronto’s The Morning Show on June 10. The morning show welcomed Calgary’s talented Calgary-based Top Chef Canada season three competitors Nicole Gomes and Chris Shaften, the Calgary Stampede and the upcoming inaugural Tour of Alberta. Tourism Calgary is also hosting A-list Toronto media at an exclusive viewing party to create media stories and entice reporters and social media influencers to experience Calgary first-hand.

“Our research shows that Torontonians are curious about Calgary and open to considering our city for future vacations. We’re leveraging our partnership with Shaw Media to gain access to a major target market,” says Danis. “The response to our visit has been incredible – upcoming events like the Stampede, Tour of Alberta and PGA Champions Tour are grabbing people’s attention and we hope will motivate people to come and visit us.”
Publicity value of Calgary’s involvement on the Top Chef Canada program is significant. The news of Calgary as the finale location has generated additional media and social media interest while providing unique travel packaging and contest opportunities.

Early success of the campaign has been marked by record traffic to visitcalgary.com, seeing an increase of 60% over the previous year including several single day website visitation records and referrals to industry partner website up more than 50%.

In 2012, Calgary welcomed 5.2 million visitors to the city, 87% of whom were from Alberta and the rest of Canada. As such, the Canadian market remains an incredibly important segment for the future growth and success of Calgary’s tourism industry.

“This partnership and campaign has been made possible through the support from our tourism partners at Travel Alberta, the Calgary Hotel Association and Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance. And, of course, theinnovative chefs who have helped grow the Calgary food scene to what is it today,” says Danis.

North America’s fastest growing major city is also a rising culinary destination. A youthful crew of culinary adventurers, proven trend cultivators, and kitchen innovators are making Calgary’s new calling card a culinary one.

  • The National Post calls Calgary “Canada’s next culinary capital”.
  • Cooking up awards and making national headlines, Calgary bypassed Vancouver and Montreal on VACAY.ca’s Top 50 Restaurants in Canada with eight Calgary restaurants making the list.
  • The city recently led all Prairie provinces on Maclean’s Magazine’s best restaurant list with a total of five mentions.
