Calgary Doors are Open

Thursday June 20, 2013 saw flood waters overwhelm Calgary’s Bow and Elbow rivers and run unabated through neighbourhoods adjacent to the rivers including the downtown core and Stampede Park. Many downtown hotels were closed for days due to power outages. And more than 100 tourism businesses (restaurants, hotels, attractions and events) were closed for various lengths of time with just a few continuing to recover from the flood’s devastating effects.

On July 4, just two weeks after the flood, The City of Calgary prepares to lift the state of emergency by the end of the day, and all but one of the city’s hotels are open as are the vast majority of Calgary’s attractions, restaurants and signature experiences.

Our thoughts and best wishes go first and foremost to the people of the communities gravely affected by the events throughout the region. Calgary is recovering thanks to the tireless efforts of our first responders, our volunteers and the contributions of our whole community.

A big thank you to the dedicated workers and volunteers who have spent countless hours getting Calgary back up and running. As the City of Calgary prepares to end the local state of emergency, Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Tourism Calgary and the citizens of Calgary invite you to join us in Canada's strongest city. Our doors are open, and we are ready to host the world.
