2013 Tourism Awards

Tourism Calgary and some of our close partners have been selected as finalists for The Canadian Tourism Awards presented by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) as well as the Alberta Tourism Awards (ALTO) presented by Travel Alberta. The Canadian Tourism Awards recognize success, leadership and innovation in Canada’s tourism industry and reward those people, places and organizations that have gone above and beyond to offer travellers superior tourism experiences in Canada. Tourism Calgary & partners - “Calgary, Our Doors are Open”

Just days following the June flood, Tourism Calgary rallied the tourism community in a time of crisis in an effort to quickly demonstrate recovery and mitigate further loss. Like 100,000 Calgarians Tourism Calgary was displaced by the flood. The team forged ahead and coordinated a partnership with the Calgary Hotel Association, Travel Alberta, Tourism Canmore Kananaskis and Delta Hotels and Resorts. The resulting $700,000 integrated marketing campaign changed the conversation from a city underwater to a city open for business.

Response to the ‘Doors Open’ campaign has been overwhelmingly positive from visitors, industry, The City, its Mayor, and Calgarians.

  • 85% of travellers surveyed said the campaign reassured them Calgary had recovered from the flood.
  • 17% of travellers located in Toronto indicated an increased likelihood to visit in the next six months due to the campaign.
  • 90% of respondents stated the video and radio ads told them Calgary recovered well from the flood.
  • The campaign video and its versions have been viewed more than 300,000 times and was the second most popular video in July on YouTube Canada.
  • Website traffic to visitcalgary.com fell by 50% in the week following the flood, but increased by close to 50% for July and August year-over-year.

Calgary's recovery and the 'Doors Open' campaign was also recently recognized by Strategy as the best comeback brand.

Tourism Calgary & Partners - “Right Here – Calgary’s New Destination Video”

Four Calgary promotional agencies, Tourism Calgary, Calgary Economic Development, the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre and the Calgary Hotel Association came together and decided to create a strong and engaging destination video that would showcase Calgary as the vibrant city it is today. The timing for this collaboration was perfect, as all of the agencies had adopted the new promotional brand, “Calgary – Be Part of the Energy” in 2012 and this video would bring the new brand to life.

Through this collaboration, a new destination video, “Right Here”, was launched on April 10. The new destination video revealed a Calgary that surprised people with its diversity of experiences, reflected the pride Calgarians feel for their city, and broadened perceptions of a city whose youth, growth and opportunity are attractive to potential guests regardless of whether they are looking for a place to live or visit.
